Sunny Beach
Known locally as Slanchev Bryag you will come to know it as Sunny Beach and it is the largest resort for package holidays in Bulgaria. With an 8km Blue Flag white sand beach the resort has become a magnet for thousands of British, German and Scandinavian tourists each year. The area has a lively nightlife with many nightclubs and restaurants and the resort has seen a huge increase in the number of new build developments during the last few years.
Nessebar
Nessebar, set on the Black Sea coast consists of Old Nessebar and New Nessebar.
Old Nessebar town is steeped in history with narrow cobbled streets and timber-built houses and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This much treasured area is over 3000 years old and was originally the site of a Thracian settlement. The town features ancient monuments, churches and fortresses. In New Nessebar you'll find established hotels, bars & restaurants offering facilities to the visitors from the Old town.
Varna
Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with a population of approx 350,000. It is known as the 'seaside capital of Bulgaria' and the queen of the Black Sea. Located by the side of the big Varna Bay, 134 km north of Bourgas and 469 km from Sofia, this pretty seaside resort has a busy international airport and a busy port. West of the city is the Varna Lake, which is of importance for transport, providing the seaside connection between the Ports of Varna and Varna-West.
The city itself is like an amphitheatre and follows the curves of the Bay of Varna. It is surrounded by lots of gardens, vineyards and deciduous groves.
More than 150 cultural and historical monuments of different historical periods have been preserved in the territory of Varna.
Some famous landmarks include the Varna Dolphinarium, the Sea Garden, the Roman Baths, the Palace of Culture and Sports, the Varna Necropolis, the Varna Observatory and Planetarium. The nearby cave monastery Aladzha is also a popular tourist sight. Additionally, the 2 km long bridge Asparuhov most is a popular place for bungee jumping.
Burgas
Burgas is the second-largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It is the main sea port of South Bulgaria and has a modern, international airport, a university and a great number of cultural institutions.
It is the capital of Burgas Province and an industrial and tourist centre located by the side of the Burgas Bay. North, West and South it is encircled by lakes Atanassovsko, Bourgasko, and Mandrensko. Located 134 km south of Varna and 385 km from Sofia.
As a resort it is known for its warm sea and the dark colour of its sandy beaches, its relaxed atmosphere and an abundance of restaurants and outdoor cafes. The attractive resort complexes, the long and sunny summer and the cool evenings have turned Burgas into a romantic destination for summertime holidays.
You may like to visit District Museum of History, Ethnographic Museum, Museum of Nature and Science, Art Gallery, Opera House and the International Folklore Festival.
Byala & Obzor
Byala and Obzor are small towns situated on an unspoilt stretch of the Black Sea Coast. This area is popular with Bulgarian tourists and has remained largely unspoilt by property developers and foreign tourists. There are a number of developments within Byala with prices lower than Sunny Beach however you should take into account the facilities are likely to be less impressive.
Sozopol
Just 31km south of Burgas sits Sozopol that has remained largely hidden from Western European tourists until recently. The town is popular with Eastern European visitors and Bulgarians but lately British tourists have found the beauty of this atmospheric fishing harbour town. The harbour is filled with the fishing boats that supply the restaurants on the promenade with fresh seafood and cars are banned from the town centre during the summer. The city of Burgas with its international airport is only 20 minutes away along the new dual carriageway.
Golden Sands
Is a large resort just 18km north of Varna which used to be highly popular with eastern Europeans and wealthy Bulgarians. There is an excellent 4km sandy beach which is sloping gently and so perfect for children. The resort is now popular with British, Irish and German holidaymakers. Local facilities include restaurants, bars, a casino and excellent water sports on the beach.
