Lovech

The attractive and modern town of Lovech is one of the oldest in Bulgaria situated 150 km northeast from the capital of Sofia, 35 km to the north of Troyan, 86 km to the west of Veliko Turnovo and 65 km to the north-west of Gabrovo.

Lovech lies picturesquely on both banks of the Osam river and is entered along an old Roman road. The town is known locally as the 'town of the lilacs' because of its abundance of lilac bushes which can be seen in Stratesh park located outside of the town. This recreational park is also home to the second largest zoo in Bulgaria. 20 km northeast of Lovech lies the famous Devetashka cave which dates back to the Paleolithic period with 11 underground lakes and a huge entrance chamber.

With its wide choice of good restaurants, pizza and fast food restaurants, cafes and bars makes Lovech a popular tourist destination. Try the local specialties of flat sausages, stuffed peppers and Lovech Plum Brandy.
