Pleven

The town of Pleven is located 170 km from the capital of Sofia, 320 km from the Black Sea Coast and 30km from the Danube River in the central part of the Danubian Plain.

Pleven has a rich cultural and historical heritage and became widely known for the battles during the Russian-Turkish war 1877-78 as a result of which Bulgaria was liberated from the 500-year Ottoman domination. The town has many museums and monuments to visit which honour the battles that took place.

The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters but with low snowfalls and with its rich agricultural soil makes it an ideal place for growing vines. In 1980 was the first place in the country to open a Viticulture (the growing of grapevines for fruit or winemaking) School.
